Martyrdom is Here and Now
Middle East News: Evangelist Slain - Warning this article is a little graphic, but it brings me to the ultimate question. Do I truly have the guts to live a life of risk for Christ wherever he leads?
I have heard some say that Martyrdom is a thing of the past, and that it is nothing to worry about in this day and age. They are right, it is NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, but it is definitely not something that only happened in ancient times. If you disagree with me read the link above from the other side of the world.
The disciples of old chose to risk greatly for the cause of Christ. It was their risk that often brought about persecution and an early entrance to Heaven. It wasn't just that they lived during a dangerous time, in fact many of them may have lived to a ripe old age if they chose to avoid risk. But these men chose to live out a proactive faith in spite of the dangers that surrounded them. The disciples weren't striving to be Martyrs, and neither should we. They strove to be completely and fully devoted to God no matter what the cost. And some times that led them to a place that cost them everything. What will it take for us to be a people who willingly risk for Christ even if that invites us into a lifestyle of uncertainty, persecution, and the very real possibility of martyrdom?
